Power Snatch, Hayley Williams’ new group, is worth it

Hayley Williams is in one of the best moments of her career. In 2025, the Paramore vocalist has not only released a 20-track album, ‘Ego Death At A Bachelorette Party’, and collaborated with David Byrne on ‘What Is The Reason For It?’. He has also had time to form a new group called Power Snatch. Like everything he has been doing, it is very worth it.

Power Snatch is a collaborative project with producer and multi-instrumentalist Daniel James, who had already worked with the artist on different occasions, including her latest LP. The only song by the group available on platforms is ‘ASSIGNMENT’, a heavy piece of spoken word that draws on both grunge and pop and in which Williams asks something essential: “Why men?”

‘ASSIGNMENT’ works well on its own, but don’t be fooled by it. It is not the only single available from Power Snatch. On its Bandcamp page, for free, we can enjoy three other great songs that show the versatility of the project. ‘DMs’ has hints of shoegaze, with its low BPM and sound effects, but is essentially guitar and piano pop: “I remember when I was your girl,” Williams sings.

Something these three songs have in common is their instant familiarity. Not because they seem like copies of other songs, but because of the good melodies they exhibit. In ‘DUH’, Williams remembers both Avril Lavigne, for her naive touch, and Lily Allen, for her personal way of writing.

In this one, the one from Paramore lists all the things she thinks about, from “the 40s”, “the menopause” and “palm trees” to “hanging out with guys in bands twice my age.” He even leaves a line worthy of an Instagram caption: “I think of ‘Wayne’s World’ the way some think of ‘The Godfather’.”

‘HOLE IN THE CEILING’ is the group’s most curious composition so far. Williams sings about “falling in love again” as the song veers from alternative rock to pop with a fascinating change of melody. In the background, different saxophone and drone samples create the atmosphere. In the chorus, Williams sounds like… Jessica Pratt?
