Paco I love you, between Cocteau Twins and Slowdive in ‘only with you’

Shoegaze is not dead. This is demonstrated by Paco Te Quiero in ‘Solo Contigo’, the last single before the release of his debut album. This one has everything to succeed in the Spanish indie scene, blurring the boundaries between shoegaze and dream pop while offering a memorable melody. It’s the Song of the Day.

It’s easy to deduce that Paco Te Quiero is made up mainly of film students just by watching the video clip for ‘Only With You’. They are simple images, like a couple on a motorcycle hugging or a girlfriend in the center of a skid, which together with the music seem to take on enormous depth.

This is the total merit of the song, which begins with guitars full of reverb and enchants from the moment the keyboard riff that accompanies the entire song enters. They say it is inspired by Gorillaz’s ‘Melancholy Hill’. The nostalgia it provokes is the same. From there, still in dream pop territory, furious guitars and shoegaze effects appear in the mix.

It is easy to see groups like Cocteau Twins or Slowdive in ‘only with you’, with the voice of Gloria, the lead singer, directly recalling that of Rachel Goswell: “I need to forget that I exist,” she repeats during the song. After 3 EPs and 3 other singles, the group formed by Gloria, Lucía, Frans, Nacho, Iosu and Joan has found its voice.
