Neil Younggives access to its catalog to the inhabitants of Greenland. The Canadian has stated that it is a “direct response to President Donald Trump’s recent threats against the territory”
Neil Young has made available to the residents of Greenland his entire catalog as a direct response to the president’s recent threats donald trump against the territory. This has his entire discography, along with an extensive archive of concerts, unreleased recordings and musical films in high definition sound. Access, which typically costs between $24.99 and $99.99 annually, will be completely free as long as users reside in Greenland.
The Canadian artist announced the measure through a public letter published in the Neil Young Archives, in which he expresses his solidarity with the Greenlandic population amid the current climate of political tension. “I hope my music and films relieve some of the stress and unjustified threats you are experiencing from our unpopular and, hopefully, temporary government,” he wrote. “This is an offer of peace and love. We hope other organizations follow the spirit of our example.”
This is not the first time Neil Young It positions itself politically, not without controversy. In 2022 started a “boycott” of Spotify and then relaunch its entire catalog in March 2024. A few months ago, it removed it from Amazon Musicstating that it would continue this way as long as the company remains owned by Jeff Bezos. On this occasion, it has also attracted criticism. The controversial fact is that it provides free access to a large territory, but with only 55,000 inhabitants. This can be interpreted as a political message, but also as a headline-grabbing marketing ploy.
