Maruja is a British experimental rock band formed in Manchester in 2014 known for its dynamic post-pink fusion, jazz rock and noise. His noisy Jazz-Punk style is emblematic of issues such as ‘The Invisible Man’ and the saxophone is the protagonist of many of his compositions, for example of ‘The Tinker’, where he winds in the manner of free-jazz.
Maruja’s name – you have guessed – comes from the famous Spanish word. Harry Wilkinson, vocalist of Maruja, says he decided the name of the group when at age 16 he saw this word written in the poster of an “old and ramshackle” store located in a remote town in Spain. They do not pronounce it “Maruha” or pretend.
Maruja, also made up of Joe Carroll (saxophone, voice), Matt Buonaccorsi (bass) and Jacob Hayes (drums), was released in 2023 with the EP
The first advance of ‘Pain To Power’ has been the Embiste Noise-Punk of ‘Look Down On Us’, which you will like if you like Girl Band. The second, ‘Saose’, also titled with a female name, this time from Ireland, is today’s song.
‘Saoarse’ proposes a clear motto: “It is our differences that make us beautiful.” On this slogan, Maruja delivers a rich composition of jazz-punk that alternates episodes of beautiful calm with others of pure nerve, intertwining saxophone passages, strings and guitars. If the word “Saoing” means “free” in Irish, this song conveys freedom without limits.
