Van Gogh's Ear takes refuge in faith on his return with Amaia

La Oreja infantilize Amaia, while her single stagnates

La Oreja de Van Gogh has published a statement on Instagram celebrating the return of Amaia Montero to the group. In particular, they praise Montero’s talent for writing melodies, although the tone used by the group can be infantilizing toward the vocalist. “This one here seems like a normal girl, on the short side, but there’s room for a whole universe in there,” the band writes. “And those two little cat eyes are actually a pair of windows to the place where the magic happens: there are more melodies in that head than anyone can invent in ten lives.”

La Oreja, a group fond of diminutives, qualifies the praise with a dart wrapped in affection, stating that Amaia is “headstrong like herself” and that she has “a more complicated character than seeing the shadow in the wind”, but also a “giant, jelly-like heart.”

Amaia, probably with her “face soaked” with emotion, responded directly in the comments section of the La Oreja post. The singer acknowledges that “I am not easy, but I am clear that my heart beats big thanks to you,” and claims to have seen herself reflected in the band’s words, which are “like looking in a kind mirror, one of those that does not judge, that understands even what one does not yet know how to explain.” It seems like a lyric from La Oreja, certainly.

The new era of Van Gogh’s Ear is filled with a love as big “as the whole sky and the whole sea” (Amaia’s words). However, popular acceptance of ‘We’re All Dancing The Same Song’ is, for now, moderate.

After rising to number 42 on Spotify in Spain, ‘We’re All Bailando The Same Song’ has been dropping positions until falling to number 135. On the last day, however, it has risen 10 places, settling at number 125. The song has more than 700,000 listens on Spotify a week after its premiere. That is to say, these are moderate data for a long-awaited return that has enjoyed so much media focus: the song was presented on television, with a “live” performance during New Year’s Eve. In fact, this performance exceeds one million views on YouTube, which is not bad either, although it could be a “little” better.

The commercial performance of ‘We’re All Bailando La Misma Canción’ is not what was expected for a group with enormous acceptance both in Spain and in Latin America, although it is true that a song of their style – pop-rock, synth-pop – usually has a rather progressive reception in our country, becoming seasoned live, especially when it is a group with La Oreja’s catalog of classics. Or perhaps La Oreja is feeling a little sorry for having jumped on the religious wave with the impudence of that refrain “I believe in God”?
