The Irish group of Rap Kneecap has been vetoed to enter Hungary over the next three years, just a few weeks before their expected performance at the Sziget festival.
The country’s government, led by Viktor Orbán, justified the decision claiming that the trio promotes anti -Semitism and glorifies terrorism. In response, Kneecap has described the measure as “absolutely scandalous” and “political maneuver.”
The announcement was made by Secretary of State Zoltán Kovács through social networks, stating that the group represents a “threat to national security”. Sziget, on the other hand, has publicly regretted the government decision and defended artistic freedom: “We condemn hate speeches, but we also guarantee the right to freedom of expression of our artists,” said the organizers.
In his statement, Kneecap denounced the measure as a “political distraction” and reaffirmed his opposition to hate crimes, ensuring that none of its members has been convicted of any crime. “This is one more attempt to silence those who denounce the genocide against the Palestinian people,” they said, attacking directly against Orbán and reiterating their commitment to social justice and freedom of expression.
The controversy arrives at a delicate time for the group, which was recently withdrawn from other European festivals after incidents in their political actions and statements. Despite this, Kneecap has assured that he will continue to defend his principles: “We will continue to fight. We will continue winning.”
Sziget Festival, which will be held from August 6 to 11 in Budapest, will feature performances by Charli XCX, Chappell Roan, Shawn Mendes, at $ Ap Rocky, Post Malone and Kid Cudi, among others.
