Katy Perry cleverly recovers her rock side in the devilish ‘Watch It Burn’

Sometime in the last decade, between ‘Roar’ and ‘Swish Swish’, we forgot that we actually met Katy Perry on a pretty rock record. Both ‘I Kissed a Girl’ and ‘Hot’N Cold’ featured prominent electric guitar, as we saw at the Super Bowl by Lenny Kravitz.

Now Katy Perry leaves behind the funny EDM of ‘Smile’ and ‘143’ to return to that emo… funny? Maybe, but melodically ‘Watch It Burn’ is quite incontestable. I would say that a return to full form if it weren’t for the fact that ‘bandaids’ – a song with which this novelty appears paired on platforms, we suppose in anticipation of a new album – was already quite good with that tremolo effect so The Smiths.

‘Watch It Burn’, which also connects with the 2000s rock sound of Linkin Park, tries to solve the singer’s public image problems. “You say I was difficult to love, for years I have tried to grow up (…) I gave everything and now I give up, I don’t want to make a scene, but give me gas.”

So no, Katy Perry is not giving up; so yes, the chorus does set up “that scene.” Katy Perry lights the fuse, which is exactly what we see in her video clip. In it the artist emerges from a stretcher, looks possessed with her trailing tail, survives on the streets, until she reaches a church and comes across holy water…

A not at all subtle metaphor in what is intended to be a song of resurrection that we will surely enjoy at the next edition of Río Babel in Madrid, which is being held next weekend. Apparently elsewhere, ‘Watch It Burn’ is already incorporated into their repertoire.

What do you think of Katy Perry’s ‘Watch It Burn’?
