Katy Perry advances ‘Watch it Burn’: “I have the right to be angry”

With her 2010 hit, ‘The One That Got Away’, established as one of the most successful songs of the moment, even resisting the onslaught of Olivia Rodrigo, Katy Perry is preparing the release of a new single called ‘Watch It Burn’, which could be part of her next album. Its premiere will follow that of ‘Bandaids’ last November, a song that went largely unnoticed despite its high-budget video clip.

Perry, who is performing at a couple of Spanish festivals this summer, Río Babel and O Son do Camiño, played a short preview of ‘Watch It Burn’ during an interview with producer Justin Tranter, in which it plays in the background. The pop-rock sound clearly refers to that of their debut, ‘One of the Boys’, specifically to their 2008 hit ‘Hot N Cold’, and to that of contemporaries such as Kelly Clarkson.

In this same interview, Perry – who has just been seen posing on a red carpet with her partner, former Canadian Minister Justin Trudeau, for the first time – has spoken about the meaning of ‘Watch It Burn’ to vindicate her right to express her anger at things that deserve it. It refers specifically to his hard last year, in which he chained criticism and continued hatred for his trip to space and the launch of his reviled album ‘143’ – which this site liked a little more -, created in collaboration with the even more reviled producer Dr. Luke.

“In ‘Watch It Burn’ I’m dealing with my darkness,” Perry says in the interview. “Last year was pretty tough.” Then, she expands the reflection to her life in general: «For my entire life, I haven’t given myself permission to be really angry about things that, damn, I should have been angry about. What I did was repress it. I have a right to be angry for a damn moment. Instead of falling into the “poor me,” it was like: this fucking pain… I’m going to feel this pain, I’m going to feel this anger and move on.

In a clear attempt to correct its strategy, ‘Bandaids’ did not have the participation of Dr. Luke and it seems that ‘Watch It Burn’ will not be an exception either. Its release date has not been confirmed, but it seems that it will not go beyond this month of June. Perry’s interview with Tranter can be seen in full starting this Wednesday, June 17.
