In the middle of the investigation opened by the complaints of two of his former employees for sexual assault and trafficking in human beings, Julio Iglesias has asked that the case be closed at the National Court Prosecutor’s Office. This has been reported by El Mundo. The singer’s defense has alleged “the absence of jurisdiction of the Spanish courts and, consequently, of the Prosecutor’s Office.”
The accused has also requested access to the investigation proceedings and questions whether the complainants have been granted the status of protected witnesses. The two women who participated in the joint investigation by elDiario.es and Univision Noticias claimed to have suffered repeated sexual assaults while working for the singer in his mansions in the Dominican Republic.
In recent days, Iglesias has denied the accusations in a public statement: “I deny having abused, coerced or disrespected any woman.” The Attorney General’s Office would be analyzing whether it is competent to investigate the facts. If so, the National Court would carry out an investigation for up to six crimes of trafficking, criminal group, sexual crimes and crimes against workers’ rights, and injuries.
