Julio Iglesias has been accused by two women of sexual assault and humiliation suffered while they worked as maids for the singer at his residences in the Caribbean. The events, as reported, occurred in 2021, so they are very recent. The investigation describes, by the former employees, a work environment similar to a “dictatorship” and a “slavery” regime, according to the investigation carried out by elDiario.es and Univision Noticias over three years.
The complainants have used fictitious names to protect their identity. “Rebeca” claims that the singer frequently called her to his room after work and that there he subjected her to touching without consent, including “finger penetration,” in addition to other physical and verbal abuse. She also recounts a nighttime episode in which, according to her testimony, she was forced to perform sexual practices on him for hours while he suffered from sciatica pain.
“Laura”, who worked as a physiotherapist, claims that Julio Iglesias kissed her and touched her without her consent, and describes that she was subjected to constant humiliation. She says that the atmosphere seemed friendly in her first days at work, but that she soon began to be reprimanded and embarrassed for everyday actions, for months and for practically any reason.
Both locate the episodes at Iglesias’ properties in Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic, and in Lyford Cay, in the Bahamas, when the singer was 77 years old, and maintain that Iglesias’ actions were known by several people in charge of the home, some of whom even facilitated the meetings. In addition, they denounce precarious working conditions, exhausting hours for months without breaks and the absence of written contracts. The investigation also indicates that Iglesias was specifically looking for young women to work in their homes.
The media responsible for the investigation have consulted the residence staff, but some officials have not responded, while a former worker has defended Iglesias’ image, specifically his behavior of “respect towards women”, and has described the accusations as “bullshit”. The testimonies, however, portray an environment marked by hostility, tension and constant mistreatment, where physical, psychological and sexual abuse would have been normalized, according to the complainants.
As a result of the news, Más Madrid has asked to withdraw the Gold Medal of the Community of Madrid from Julio Iglesias. Isabel Díaz Ayuso has made it clear in a tweet that this will not happen. At the same time, he has defended the accused, describing the elDiario.es investigation as “discredit”: “The raped and attacked women are in Iran, with the complicit silence of the ultra-left.” This clarifies that Madrid “will never contribute” to discredit the “most universal singer of all.”
The raped and attacked women are in Iran, with the complicit silence of the ultra-left.
The Community of Madrid will never contribute to the discredit of artists, much less that of the most universal singer of all: Julio Iglesias.
