José María Castells, DJ behind the Max Mix saga, dies

José María Castells, DJ and producer responsible for the famous megamix saga of the 80s and 90s, died this January 1 at the age of 59, a victim of cancer. The disease was detected last May. His colleagues from Dream Team Megamix, Toni Peret and Quique Tejada, have broken the news: “Today is a sad day for the world of music.”

In this statement, Peret and Tejada highlight that Castells was active until the time of his illness, wasting “talent both in the production of his latest megamixes and in his ability to transmit and make the dance floor vibrate.” They describe him as a “key figure in the music industry”, after being one of the creators of the successful Max Mix compilations.

These were released in Spain through the Max Music record label, founded by Ricardo Campoy and Miguel Degà and active from 1985 to 1997. This is exactly the central theme of the documentary series ‘Megamix Brutal’, directed by Rafa de los Arcos and available on RTVE Play.

The role that Castells plays in the entire plot is totally out of a movie, since he was directly involved in an assassination attempt ordered by Miguel Degá. However, this was not aimed at the Catalan DJ, but at Ricardo Campoy, in an attempt to dominate the dance music scene in Spain.
