Jens Lekman and the costume party that revives a love

Jens Lekman, the beloved Swedish singer -songwriter author of the only and unmatched ‘Night Falls Over Kortedala’, one of the best albums in 2007, and other works equally recommended such as ‘Life Will Save You Now’ (2017) or the recent series ‘Correspondence’ (2019), returns with a peculiar conceptual album that will be put on sale on September 12.

‘Songs for Other People’s Weddings’ is the story of an indie musician who plays at weddings to win the bread, writing original songs for each couple who requests their services, but, in turn, has to deal with a distance relationship. Lekman has created the project with the writer David Levithan, who has written an ad hoc novel. That is, ‘Songs for Oher People’s Weddings’ is a musical and literary launch, at the same time. The book, in fact, is now available.

The grace of ‘Songs for Other People’s Weddings’ is that it is based on Lekman’s own life, which has developed by accident a parallel race as a bridal singer after, in 2004, he launched the song ‘If You Ever Need A Stranger (to Sing at Your Wedding)’, and they rained proposals to sing at weddings. Lekman says that, especially since streaming has established himself in the industry, this work has allowed him to get chestnuts from fire.

‘Songs for Oher People’s Weddings’ has been presented with two singles, the second of them, an ambitious cut of more than 10 minutes called ‘Wedding in Leipzig’. However, today we chose the main single, ‘Candy from A Stranger’ as a song.

‘Candy from A Stranger’ is the tender story of two lovers who resent each other in a song -based costume party. The narrator wears Prince’s ‘Rasperry Beret’. She, from ‘Crazy in Love’ by Beyoncé. The reunion serves both to remember moments of the past to revive the spark of their relationship in the present, creating a bittersweet mixture of hope for the future and melancholy for the lost time. However, what prevails is the feeling of a new opportunity. A mysterious pill “with a hair lacquer” works as a catalyst for this union.

Of course, the sound of ‘Candy from a Stranger’ is euphoric and happy, similar to the cure the ‘friday i’m in love’ or ‘Why can’t i be you?’. Lekman uses female pianos, pianos and choirs to build one of its edifying compositions. Only this chorus can encapsulate the entire romantic illusion of the world.
