“I thought about your mother”: Cate’s surreal rupture

On September 26, Mariah Carey, Purity Ring, Zara Larsson, Jeff Tweedy, Olivia Dean, John Maus or Neko Case. Also edits album La Wesa Cate Le Bon, well known for albums such as ‘Reward’ (2019) or ‘Pompeii’ (2022), and also for her producer work of the last works of Wilco, Horsegirl, Devendra Banhart or Deerhunter.

‘Michaelangelo Dying’ will be the new album by Le Bon, but Cate has not produced it alone, but with the collaboration of his old colleague Samur Khouja. The first two advances point to an album of indie pop hot and experimental in its use of different instruments.

In both cuts, a kind of misty surrealism reigns. ‘Heaven in No Feeling’, has the entire structure of a pop guitar song, but the nebulosity of production makes it floating. Meanwhile, the raw guitars are twisted, sounding aquatic, and the saxophone notes that are fired in the air are creating a summer and melancholic environment.

‘Is It Worth It (Happy Birthday)’ Explore similar sound ideas through a ballad form. This time, the piano base, cosmic keyboards and percussions create a piece of Dream-pop that marches with leisurely rhythm, but cate contrast the conventional beauty of these elements with the inclusion of a saxophone that sounds dissonant.

Both ‘Heave is not feeling’ and ‘Is It Worth It (Happy Birthday)’ expose tensions in an increasingly distant relationship. “Heaven” gives some clues in phrases such as “you want more love than you have ever imagined” or “you smoke our love as if you had never known violence.” For his part, “Happy Birthday” is full of restlessness, but adds a personal and moving element through a family image: “I thought about your mother, I hope you know, how much I loved her.”
