There was enormous expectation to discover what Harry Styles brought in his return to music after four years, and the figures have reflected it at first: ‘Aperture’, the first single from Styles’ new album, has scored almost 12.5 million views on its first day on Spotify, on a global scale. An astonishing figure but it seems very inflated by the initial hype, since the song has dropped precipitously over the weekend.
Curiosity about ‘Aperture’ is continuing in these first four days of release, but well below the premiere. ‘Aperture’ fell to number 3 on its second day and, on the third, it has fallen to number 6. The second day reflects a very significant loss of views, of around 7 million streams, as official Kworb data shows. That is, almost 60% of initial listens, as reported by the X Spotify Daily Data account, which speaks of the “biggest drop in history” from number 1, in terms of streams, not positions. On Sunday the topic fell to 3.7 million streams, which already represents more than 70% compared to the first day.
Maybe it’s too early to talk about “flop”, or maybe this is the logical and expected commercial performance for a 5-minute electronic song that doesn’t cry out to be a hit like ‘As it Was’ did. Although if a current artist could turn a song like ‘Aperture’ into a global macrohit, it was Harry Styles. Will he keep his mouth shut in the end?
