Gorillaz debut on SNL playing a new song and a classic

After recent performances by Geese, Cardi B and Mumford & Sons on Saturday Night Live, this Saturday it was Gorillaz’s turn. Damon Albarn’s group has performed on the American show to present their new album, ‘The Mountain’. It’s not only the first time a virtual band has stepped on that stage, but also the first time for Damon Albarn. Oasis can’t say the same, as the Gallagher brother duo performed on Saturday Night Live in 1997.

During the Gorillaz night there was a funny cameo by Harry Styles, who released an album this Friday, during the monologue of Ryan Gosling, who was also the person in charge of introducing Gorillaz before each song. Styles appeared sitting in the stands to remember that he will participate in the show next week as a guest artist and presenter.

Returning to Gorillaz, the group played a new song, ‘The Moon Cave’, and a classic from 2000, ‘Clint Eastwood’, and both performances included dozens of musicians on stage, because, in addition to guest artists, backing vocalists and a string ensemble participated in ‘The Moon Cave’. ‘The Moon Cave’ featured Asha Puthli, Black Thought and Anoushka Shankar, and ‘Clint Eastwood’ featured rapper Del the Funky Homosapien, who appeared on the original recording more than two decades ago. While Homosapien rapped, Albarn played the melodica, a type of blown keyboard similar to the accordion.
