Neil Sedaka, author of hits like ‘Oh! Carol’, ‘Calendar Girl’ or ‘Breaking Up Is Hard To Do’, has died at the age of 86. This is what his family has reported: “A true rock and roll legend, an inspiration to millions, but most importantly, at least for those of us who were fortunate enough to know him, an incredible human being.”
Sedaka’s career spanned six decades in which the singer achieved three number 1 hits in the United States, in addition to composing for other artists. In total, it is estimated that he wrote or co-wrote more than 500 songs. In the ’70s, for example, he worked with ABBA on the English lyrics for ‘Ring-Ring’ and was hired by Elton John as a songwriter for his label, Rocket Records.
Neil Sedaka’s work is best known for his early and late 50s and early 60s hits, such as ‘Breaking Up Is Hard To Do’, ‘Calendar Girl’ or the well-known ‘Oh! Carol’, dedicated to his partner at the time, Carole King.
Sedaka was one of the artists buried by the British invasion and Beatlemania, but he was able to resurface in the 1970s with hits like ‘Laughter in the Rain’. However, he disappeared from the hit list in the 1980s, although that did not mean leaving the stage.
