Genia is one of the latest signings to the Def Jam Recordings label. Genia’s success has been cultivated – you guessed it – on TikTok, where the young singer from Victorville, California, has nearly 200,000 followers. Like many others, she began uploading covers to the platform and soon took the step to publishing her own material, backed by a multinational record label.
Openly influenced by Rihanna and Beyoncé, Genia proposes a recovery of the R&B that was played on American radio at the beginning of the 21st century. ‘Damage’, for example, is an uptempo production that Pussycat Dolls could have recorded. In an era obsessed with DIY and bedroom-whatever, Genia returns to large studio productions.
In a musical context that rewards nostalgia, from which projects such as the British trio FLO benefit, the rhythmic ‘Gave’, another of Genia’s star songs, or the ballad ‘Need U Tonite’ with Breez can also find their place. Kennedy, which you will like if you liked the slow jams of Janet Jackson and Jennifer Lopez circa 2004-2005.
The comparison with Pussycat Dolls is not coincidental: Danish producer Jonas Jeberg, responsible for ‘I Hate this Part’ and other hits by Selena Gomez, Nicki Minaj and Fifth Harmony, is behind several Genia productions. Among them, the Californian artist’s plethora of new single, ’10 Out of 10′, the last Song Of The Day of 2024.
’10 Out of 10′ is one of those bulletproof R&B-pop productions that the American industry is capable of. It is true that using laser shooting effects in an R&B production is no longer as modern as it once was, but when you have a “10 out of 10” chorus on the table, the decorative elements of the song take a backseat.
