The charismatic bassist of The Stone Roses (and also a member of Primal Scream for a few years) Gary Mounfield –aka Mani– has died at the age of 63, as confirmed by his brother Greg.
The sad news about the death of Gary “Mani” Mounfieldlegendary bassist of The Stone Roses and departs for a season from the Primal Scream of Bobby Gillespiehas been confirmed by his own brother through an emotional publication on social networks: “With a broken heart, I announce the sad passing of my brother. May Gary Mani Mounfield rest in peace”wrote Greg Mounfield. The causes of death appear to have not been confirmed, although they could point to a collapse.
Peanutborn in Manchester, was a key figure contributing his marked bass lines to that characteristic sound of the seminal The Stone Roseswith which the training they completed Ian Brownthe guitarist John Squire and the drummer Reni they mixed baggy and what was called sound Madchester in the late eighties and early nineties. Along the way there were only two studio albums left, the immortal “The Stone Roses” (89) and the claimable “Second Coming” (94).
After the dissolution of The Stone Roses, Peanut joined the no less necessary Primal Screambefore returning to his mother band to enjoy the successful reunion starring the quartet in 2011, even recording a couple of new songs: “All For One” and “Beautiful Thing”. A return that, given the circumstances, seems like it will never happen again. He was also a member of the bassist supergroup Freebass next to Andy Rourke of The Smiths and Peter Hook of New Orderalong with the singer Gary Briggs of Haven.
Among those who have already expressed their condolences are his partner Ian Brown in The Stone Roses, Liam Gallagher of Oasis, Tim Burgess of The Charlatans either Rowetta of Happy Mondays.
rest in peace, Gary “Mani” Mounfield.
