Jazz chords, subtle R&B melodies, playful rhythms and a magnetic musical personality. This is the universe of Liim, one of the strongest promises of New York hip hop. He has already fallen in love with artists as important as Tyler, the Creator, who described him as a mix of “Max B on Stereolab chords”, and Joey Bada$$. ‘For The Both Of Us’ is the Song of the Day.
The first time the author of ‘CHROMAKOPIA’ noticed Liim Lasalle was because of the song ‘Petty Pete’. He published it on his Instagram Stories, with a simple annotation: “I love this song.” Liim’s own music could be compared to Tyler’s, especially in his ‘nerdy’ approach to chord progressions, but it also doesn’t clash with artists like Steve Lacy, Blood Orange or Pharrell.
@pigsandplans In a recent interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, Tyler, The Creator gave a shoutout to @Liim after being asked about which artist he’s been loving that he wants more people to know about. Tyler explained, “This kid named Liim—he’s from New York. I don’t wanna compare him to stuff…but it’s like Max B over Stereolab chords, but you can tell he be with like dirty skaters…it’s really cool.” 🛹 Liim’s upcoming album, ‘Liim Lasalle Loves You,’ is set to release September 12. __ #pigeonsandplanes #liim #tylerthecreator #zanelowe #applemusic ♬ original sound – Pigeons & Planes
The 21-year-old artist released his first album last September, titled ‘Liim Lasalle Loves You’. The first song on the album, ‘For The Both Of Us’, is one of the best starting points to start listening to what it has to offer. Although others like ‘Mezcal’ are a better example of his vocal versatility, this would be the best mix of melody and rapping.
The first part of the song is occupied by a romantic melody in which the tinkling percussion and Liim’s voice are the absolute protagonists. When all the percussion comes in, along with some very sweet chords, Liim shows that he doesn’t need to say obscenities to rap well, like many of his references: “Yes, I’m nervous and nauseous / But you deserve all the caution.”
