Estrella Morente does not forgive ‘The rumba of forgiveness’

Rosalía included in ‘Lux’ a collaboration with Estrella Morente and Sílvia Pérez Cruz titled ‘La rumba del excusa’. Such was the impact of ‘Lux’ in Spain after its release that ‘La Rumba del Perdon’ entered number 9 on the singles chart, despite being the second to last cut on the album.

Morente is about to present a concert at the Liceo in Barcelona and has given an interview to Catalunya Ràdio to promote it. In it they asked him about ‘La Rumba del Perdon’, and his words about Rosalía and the song could not have been less flattering.

Morente claims to be disappointed with ‘La Rumba del Perdon’ because the voices of Morente and Pérez Cruz are barely heard in the choruses. “I am very upset because he has not let either of us sing,” declares the artist, who even admits to being “ashamed” of the song because she cannot “share” it with her followers, since her voice is practically imperceptible. “It makes me sad, because they haven’t let either of us sing,” she says. “He has punished us.”

‘La Rumba del Perdon’ was originally going to be a duet with Morente, says the author of ‘My Cante and a Poem’ (2001), but Rosalía had the idea of turning it into a trio. Morente explains that he spent hours in the studio over several days recording material for the song, but regrets that Rosalía used almost none of that work in the final recording. In her opinion, Rosalía has “disrespected” her work, that of Pérez Cruz and the art of music in general, and affirms that “music must prevail over the interests of the producers; if two colleagues have done work for several days, it must be respected, it cannot be thrown away.”

Although Morente points out that she does not want to “get involved in anyone’s work” and that “everyone does their job as they want”, and denies that her statements are reduced to the typical “tantrum of an artist who is just starting out”, she believes that Rosalía has not made the right decision with ‘La rumba del Perdon’, and hopes that her words serve as a “wake-up call”: “It is a call for respect and camaraderie, because you don’t play with music.”
