Dua Lipa has positioned herself in favor of the so-called “Flamingo revolution”, the movement that has been protesting in Albania for more than six weeks against a 1.6 billion euro macroresort promoted by investors led by Jared Kushner, son-in-law of Donald Trump, and Ivanka Trump. The artist, born in London and raised partly between Kosovo and Albania, has described the protests as “inspiring”.
The problem is not just the resort itself. The outrage comes from the fact that the Albanian Parliament changed the law at the end of 2024 to allow construction in protected natural areas, including the island of Sazan and the Zvërnec peninsula, two reserves of great ecological value, and did so without any public consultation process. That is the point that the singer has criticized the most.
“What worries me is that the Government could change the law to eliminate environmental protection without any type of public consultation,” Lipa said on her Service95 podcast. While Prime Minister Edi Rama sells the project as a historic opportunity for the country, protests continue to grow and even the European Union has warned that these types of decisions could complicate Albania’s candidacy to enter the bloc.
This is not the first time Dua Lipa has gotten involved in political issues. In recent years she has been one of the most visible pop artists in her support of Palestine, demanding a ceasefire in Gaza and using her networks to denounce the humanitarian situation.
@moreperfectunion Pop star Dua Lipa speaks out about the Albania protests: “I find it so inspiring to see how many people really care.” Albanians have been protesting against the billionaire takeover of their public lands for the last 6 weeks. Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump are planning to build two luxury resorts in Albania’s coastal areas, including Sazan, Albania’s only island.
