Las Nietas del Charli gave one of the most beautiful concerts of the last Monkey Week. María and Raquel Rubio Pastor, sisters like Pauline en la Playa, accompanied only by their guitars, managed to silence an audience eager to party, thanks to their beautiful lyrics and vocal harmonies.
The duo already had a 6-song EP called ‘Faro’ and now they are presenting their first full-length album, called ‘Un Sol interior’, which will be released at the beginning of May, produced by Campi Campón (Jorge Drexler, Natalia Lafourcade, Valeria Castro). The two themes that we carry, in some way, are night and day.
The influences of Las Nietas del Charli seem to be projects as sharp as Vainica Doble and as dark as Low. The latter is felt in the harsh melody, the reference to “violence” and the type of cutting percussion that we hear in ‘Rabia’. “All this rage I have inside could kill you,” expresses with frustration a lyric that regrets having “tried to love you.”
The single they just released, ‘Distancia’, our Song of the Day today, doesn’t have so much “rage” inside. He recreates a romantic scene and mentions the word “hope.” Even the return of “hunger” seems to have a positive connotation, perhaps satisfied. The “Rage” is extracted, in the form of “poison”: “How I want to see your face, walk around with my fingers, see how sleepy comes in, lovingly extract the poison.”
Las Nietas del Charli’s songs usually last, without any rush, over 5 minutes. ‘Distancia’ has a mountainous structure: towards the middle it changes only to return to the beginning. The ghostly choruses at that moment are chilling.
Therefore, don’t expect to find them on hit playlists or look at their monthly listeners. Revel in their melodies, in the calm of their arrangements even when they talk about uncomfortable emotions. There is enormous beauty above all to be tasted live, and this March 20 it will be seen again in Madrid (La Troupe Prado).
