Doechii has decided to close 2025, the most important year of his career so far, by releasing a new single. ‘girl get up’ is also a collaboration with SZA, an artist known for releasing music during the Christmas season or during the winter months: ‘LANA’, the reissue of ‘SOS’ (2022), came out in February of this year; the original edition of ‘SOS’ was published in December 2022; ‘Luther’ was released in November 2024 (remember that she, Doechii and Kendrick Lamar are part of the same label, Top Dawg Entertainment); and, for example, ‘Good Days’ was released at Christmas a few seasons ago.
‘girl get up’ is a chill-as-hell adaptation of ‘What Happened To That Boy?’ by Baby and Clipse, a hip-hop hit from 2002. It is an original production by The Neptunes, so Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo are credited. Its influence is noticeable in the prominence of the percussions, although the tempo is relaxed, almost typical of Afrobeat. This time, it’s Jay Versace (SZA, Tyler the Creator) who is in charge of production.
On this basis, Doechii and SZA – who already collaborated on the 2022 single ‘Persuasive’ – purge the bad energies they have left to start 2026 on the right foot. The structure of ‘girl get up’ follows that of a conventional hip-hop and R&B fusion: Doechii raps the verses while Solana sings the chorus.
The energies of each one contrast very effectively. On the one hand, Doechii spits verses directed at her haters, especially those who accuse her of being an “industry plant” without talent. In his rhymes, he makes it clear that he perceives misogyny, racism and ignorance, and he anticipates that he will address these issues in his next album: “You can’t imagine that I’ve worked so hard,” he raps. Meanwhile, SZA follows the line of her underrated single ‘Saturn’, floating and meditating – probably with a joint in her hand, although she doesn’t detail that -, asking to be left alone: ”I’m doing my thing, levitating, not disturbing.”
