As Donald Trump steps up his threats about a possible US invasion of Greenland, Björk’s recent words on the situation – in which she called for Greenland’s independence from Denmark – resonate in real life.
Recently, a record store in Odense, Denmark, has removed Björk’s music from its shelves to protest the Icelandic singer’s statements, reports the Icelandic media Grapevine, citing information from the Danish station TV 2.
“Starting tomorrow, it will no longer be possible to purchase Björk in our store or on our website,” RecordPusher writes in a statement posted on its Facebook page. “This is due to his statements about Denmark and Greenland, which in no way help the situation the Kingdom of Denmark currently finds itself in,” he notes.
According to the outlet, Björk’s Instagram post – which included a map of Greenland illustrated in the colors of the Danish flag and a message supporting independence – is “factually incorrect.” The outlet even compares Björk to Trump, accusing her of “creating her own reality” like the American president does. “This publication divides friends and only helps the idiot on the other side of the Atlantic… goodbye Björk,” the statement concludes.
In her post, Björk used her song ‘Declare Independence’ (2007) to send support to the Greenlandic population “in their fight for independence”, and, although she did not directly mention Trump, she noted: “Colonialism gives me real chills, and the possibility of my Greenlandic friends going from one cruel colonizer to another is too brutal to imagine.”
