Cora Yako released their third album, titled ‘Mil Pequenos Cortes’, just two weeks ago. Previous singles like ‘Nightmares’ and ‘Sign the Peace’ are everything you’d expect from a teaser: indie rock bangers. However, it is one of the songs that came out with the LP, one of those in the middle of the tracklist, that has ended up being one of the best on the album. ‘Goodbye, I love you’ is the Song of the Day.
At this point, Luis de Oleza and Carlos Sennacheribbo are practically specialists in youth indie rock. That is why a song like ‘Goodbye, I love you’, in which harmonies and strings are more important than distortion, is totally refreshing. Above all, with such a round melody.
The riff that opens the song is vintage to a certain extent, reminiscent of the nineties melodies of songs like ‘She’s So High’ by Tel Bachman or ‘There She Goes’ by The La’s. The lyrics, following this line, could also be timeless: “Things are no longer the way they were / Life is seen differently / I never understood what you expected of me.”
Although the guitars and drums are missing in the first chorus, it is enough to realize that Cora Yako have built a perfect chorus. And not only with a round melody, but with very simple and effective lyrics, which is sometimes the most important thing: “There are times when I want to forget everything and start from scratch far from here / I’d better get out of here than everything here, everything reminds me of you.” More singles like this.
