The Central Café, one of the Jazz temples in Madrid, has announced its closure for October 12. This will end 43 years of history and mean the loss of employment of 35 workers. The owners say that the cause is due to a sudden cessation of the lease of the premises, although they admit that “it was seen coming for some time” in statements to the ABC newspaper.
“The owner has decided not to continue renting us to close for a year and see what offers come to him,” explains Javier González, programmer of the room. “Despite the multiple offers presented by the club’s address, the owners never accessed, during the last seven years and after multiple attempts, to sit with representatives of the club to negotiate an agreement or at least to publicize the price for which they would rent it,” he says.
Central Café has been a national reference point for live music. With more than 14,000 concerts behind him, he has received all kinds of jazz figures, both national and international, such as George Adams, Lou Bennett, Ara Malikian or Jeanne Lee.
After a failed search for another space to carry out the activity of Central Café, an email ([email protected]) has been enabled to receive any local proposal. The last concert of the Central Café, located at number 10 of the Plaza del Ángel, will take place on October 12.
