More than a year after premiering it live, during its concert at the Government Ball in New York, also dressed as a statue of freedom, although later it has continued to touch it in all its concerts, for example in the last spring edition Sound, Chappell Roan has launched the study version of ‘The Subway’. After several attempts to find adequate production, next to his right hand Dan Nigro, he has finally achieved it.
‘The Subway’ continues to keep Chappell’s proposal from the synthesizers who dominated their successful 2023 debut and his only single of 2024, ‘Good Luck Babe’. ‘The Giver’, the single that Roan published in March, was delivered to Country, and ‘The Subway’ directly looks like an alternative pop-rock ballad of the 90s. Chappell has always sung a bit like Dolores O’Rordan de Cranberries and Alanis Morissette, and ‘The Subway’ finally looks like a song of both artists. Then, the melody “She’s Got Away” seems extracted from ‘It Must Have Been Love’ by Roxette, although it is a direct reference to ‘She’s Got A Way’ by Billy Joel.
‘The Subway’ uses the metaphor of the subway to narrate the process of overcoming a break. In this case, the New York Metro – where its video clip has been shot – symbolizes a relationship that Chappell associates this particular city, and whose memory chases him when he walks through its streets. Roan tries to overcome it, but he has not yet reached that station. There are four months and, if not, sings, with humor, that will move to Canada. “I count the days until you are another girl in the subway” is the motto of this emotional song that scores a great crescendo thanks to the final grade of Chappell. The train is finally marching towards happiness.
