The United States bombing of Caracas, capital of Venezuela, during the early hours of Saturday has culminated with the “capture” announced by Donald Trump of Nicolás Maduro, leader of the Latin American country, and his wife, Cilia Flores, with the purpose of transferring them to New York and prosecuting them for two crimes related to drug trafficking and corruption.
At the press conference held this afternoon at his residence in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, Trump announced the United States’ plans to “run” Venezuela, including its oil industry, until “a safe transition” occurs.
From Spain, the PSOE Government has made a “call for de-escalation and peace” and has joined the condemnation expressed by Sumar and Podemos against an attack that “violates international law.” Sánchez recalled that, although the Government “never recognized the Maduro regime”, it will not accept an intervention that “pushes the region into a horizon of uncertainty and war.” For its part, the opposition, led by the PP and Vox, has focused on the implications that this attack has for the recovery of the “future” of Venezuela and the “restoration of democracy.”
Among the voices that have joined the celebration for the capture of Nicolás Maduro, interpreted by some as the end of the regime in Venezuela, is Carlos Baute.
The singer, a native of Caracas and widely known in Spain for hits like ‘Hanging in Your Hands’, has taken to the networks to congratulate Venezuela on the news, which he has described as a “Christmas gift.” Recording himself walking on the street, Baute celebrated that “Mr. Trump” had “caught Maduro’s satrap.” Colleagues, such as India Martínez or Marc Seguí, have supported his statement by liking his publication.
In a text that accompanies the video, Baute has expanded his reflection on the situation that Venezuela is experiencing, stating that “all profound changes hurt” and that “we know that difficult days are coming, but after the storm there always comes calm.” «To all those who are inside – family, friends, our people –, we are praying for you and accompanying you from a distance in every way possible. “God does not abandon good people, and Venezuela is a country of good people,” added the artist. Furthermore, he pointed out that “their networks are available to inform and help with whatever is needed.”
