Britney Spears has been arrested in Ventura County, California on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, TMZ reports.
According to the American portal, which cites police sources, Spears was handcuffed by the California Highway Patrol around 9:30 p.m., booked into jail during the early hours of the morning and released around 6 a.m. The artist must appear in court on May 4.
“This has been an unfortunate incident that cannot be justified in any way,” a representative for Spears explained in a statement, reporting that “Britney will take the correct steps and comply with the law, and hopefully this can be the first step towards a long-awaited change that must occur in Britney’s life. “Hopefully he can receive the help and support he needs during this difficult time.”
Spears’ arrest comes months after the ‘Toxic’ singer was recorded last October on video driving erratically down a highway on the way to her residence.
Recently, Spears has made headlines for obtaining a permanent restraining order against a 51-year-old man who had shown up at her Los Angeles home and posted disturbing messages about her on social media.
In musical matters, Spears has surprised these days after signing the sale of the publishing rights to her catalog, for a figure that would be around 200 million dollars.
