“You will never be alone in Barcelona” is one of the titles of the album by 2charm, the duo of two “charming” Australian boys who have become known in the last couple of years with a sound that is torn between indie-techno-pop, 2010s EDM and hyperpop. Brisbane natives Tim Nelson and Sam Netterfield create music inspired by artists like Skrillex and SOPHIE, and collaborating with figures like Ninajirachi makes perfect sense when listening to their songs.
Anyone versed in Australian pop will remember that Tim and Sam were members of the band Club Sport, whose album ‘Jesus at the Gay Bar’ (2023) reached No. 1 on the Australian album chart. Speaking of gay things, Tim and Sam are married.
Their new project, apart from their marriage, is 2charm, with which they release catchy and carefree electronic pop songs that flirt with various modern styles, including dubstep, house and baile funk. Their album ‘star scum city’ can be heard since the end of February and includes songs with indie-house echoes such as ‘pregorative’, ‘invisible wings’ or the one mentioned above.
Although the real single you should know from 2charm is ‘boyfriend’, which already has more than a million listens because it is the best they have released so far. That’s why it’s the Song of the Day for today, Monday.
‘boyfriend’ places two people flirting at a party, unsure if the other is interested: “I don’t know what to say, you start to get closer to me, my eyes give me away, I look at you tenderly.” The musical production has a clear house-pop inspiration, but the voices are raised in tone, seeming to be emitted by the cartoon that decorates the album cover.
