Today is July 4, a date marked in the United States by the celebration of Independence Day. Beyoncé wanted to join the festivities by surprising her fans with an unexpected gift: an unreleased song. ‘Morning Dew (Donk)’ has been available for just a few hours on all streaming platforms and is a flirty R&B cut like the ones Beyoncé did years ago.
The song would be – according to Queen B fans – a discard from ‘BEYONCÉ’ (2013), despite the fact that its sound refers, rather, to ‘4’ (2011). In fact, Pharrell Williams produces this song with Beyoncé, whose main hook is pure sexy humor: a nice “donky donky donk” that hooks more than it should.
According to official information, the composers of ‘Morning Dew (Donk)’ are, in addition to Beyoncé and Pharrell Williams, The-Dream and Darius Dixon. Especially Pharrell’s hand is noticeable in the sound of the song.
The reason for the release of ‘Morning Dew (Donk)’ has to do with the reissue of another album, ‘B’Day’, which turns 20 this September 4, the same day that Beyoncé will turn 45. That day a reissue of ‘B’Day’ will hit stores that will include ‘Morning Dew (Donk)’ and, presumably, other unreleased cuts.
In case it seems strange to you that Beyoncé would reissue an album including an outtake from a later release, it’s actually quite common practice in the music industry. Also, we must remember that ‘B’Day’ was recorded very quickly, so there are hardly any unreleased albums from that era.
