A compilation with meaning, another that not so much

Since there are the playlists of streaming platforms, it is already a cliché to say that the compilation discs of “great hits” make no sense. “I’ll do my own playlist with which I like them!”, The world responds immediately when a “greatest hits” is announced without a particular favorite or even an essential hit. Björk, Oasis and Raphael were some of the artists who published “great hits” quite capricious and strange, already before Spotify fashion.

The cultural value that “Great hits” have had as ‘Gold’ of Abba, ‘The Immaculate Collection’ of Madonna or the Beatles red and blue discs has long been lost. To give a canonical example, a person with as many hits like Rihanna has never published a compilation, not even 10 years after his last album. However, there are still artists who insist on publishing them. For example, The Weeknd, who does not get away from the lists with a ‘The Highlights’ that he launched in 2021 and then expanded in 2024.

Another of them are Hot Chip, who just announced that ‘Joy In repetition’ comes out on September 5. It includes 15 songs, without chronological order, culminating with ‘I Feel Better’ and a new theme called ‘Devotion’. With his usual humor, he defines himself as “Beach Boys drinking pineapple cast with Hall & Oates.” Among the outstanding absences, ‘Shake a Fist’, despite the surprise he was at the time. Or maybe for it. They will demonstrate that recent issues such as ‘Eleanor’, ‘Positive’ or ‘Melody of Love’ do not lose so much with their great classics.

As a curiosity, the playlist that have set up for themselves is almost the same as the album, only that placing the new single ‘devotion’ in the lead, instead of last. Things of promotion.

The Hot Chip is a “Hit After Hit”, but much more interesting is Faver Ray’s proposal. ‘The Year of The Radical Romantics’, for sale on July 25, will not be exactly a compilation, but is presented as “a live album.” But neither will it be the typical live album with regrabations under study, the sound of the public uploaded to the parodic, nor ultimately an overproduction that does not come to mind.

Gathering songs from the three studio albums by Faver Ray, he will present advanced and different versions of his songs, with almost study sound. That is what we can conclude after such succulent advances as ‘i’m not done (Therapy Session)’ and ‘Now’s the only Time I Know (Therapy Session)’. Some will understand it rather as an “anti-recopilatory”, but we advance that a debate will open about what songs have been improved with respect to the originals.

In addition, Pias reports that the physical edition comes with a book designed and edited by Faver Ray that documents the creative process behind the visual universe of the project. The publication includes sketches, unpublished photographs, graphic trials and exclusive backstage material. Thus, you want to have it in our hands, lit.
