Today Miley Cyrus releases her new album, ‘Bass Persuades’, announced by surprise two weeks ago. It wasn’t such a big surprise, since his interview with Wondaland and then his signing with Atlantic pointed to the announcement of a new job. Curiously, the change of label does not translate into a radical change in sound: ‘Bass Persuades’ is closer to ‘Plastic Hearts’, although it also has echoes of ‘Something Beautiful’, which did not excite UMusic but did excite the readers of the site, who voted it among the best albums of the year.
Will ‘Bass Persuades’ achieve the same? At the moment, its main single is already number 1 in the JENESAISPOP Top 40, although in the official charts the matter is different. The song, with echoes of Lady Gaga from ‘The Fame Monster’, is a cool electropop exercise that talks about problems such as the sedentary lifestyle of online life or addiction to fentanyl. That “kids don’t wanna dance”, ironically, “persuades” you to dance.
The album, however, is not as social or political as ‘Bass Persuades’ might suggest. It is more focused on Miley’s life as a couple, which she dedicates to her future husband, Maxx Morando, the happy new wave of ‘Let’s Get Married’. The most danceable moments are rare: ‘Innocent Ways’, more hardcore and dark, and ‘Aftermath’, with a house and almost trance sound, stand out.
The rest moves through more relaxed and experimental terrain, with ‘Different Religion’ as one of the most industrial cuts and ‘REDLIGHTS’ as a hybrid of pop, electronics, Arabic strings and country. ‘Orbit’, the piano ballad, perhaps comes too soon. Where is the desire to maintain the energy that the pop albums of the past had?
In the forums, the reaction to ‘Bass Persuades’ is uneven, although caution prevails above all. Manitas says that he has to listen to it more in depth, but although he was especially surprised by “the crazy happycore vibe of ‘Aftermath'” and the Panda Bear sound of ‘REDLIGHTS’, the user highlights the lyrics above all. For his part, Me_Adri also highlights ‘Redlights’ as a highlight, but indicates that the album “at the moment doesn’t blow my mind.”
More forceful on the negative side is ALEXontheROOF: «I didn’t love it, sorry. Of their last 4 albums, for me this is the worst. Jota97 has to listen to it in its entirety but, for now, he has only heard slow songs and it seemed like “a drowsiness.” Perhaps those of you who comment on the web have a different opinion, or even radically opposite.
