Troye Sivan has been teasing his return these days, which will finally come in the form of an album called ‘She’s the Best’, which can be heard starting October 2. The title track serves as the first preview and is one of the most peculiar releases of his career.
‘She’s the Best’ is not an immediate banger like ‘Rush’. Instead, it proposes a musical experience. Sivan offers a whispered trip-hop, or perhaps a nineties Britpop, only punctuated by the melody that appears when reciting the title, and that resorts more to narrative and production than to looking for an easy hit.
It is also not true that there is only melody in the supposed chorus of the song, since the production is full of melodic and instrumental details. It is a song full of layers that ends up leading to a euphoric ending. But it has to be said that Troye Sivan’s whispered voice on the verses is so blended into the production that you have to strain to understand what he’s saying. It is a deliberate decision that favors immersion.
‘She’s the Best’ is an ode to her friends and describes a party girl who goes around with semen stains on her dress, hasn’t slept and fights with incels online to let off steam, and for Troye she is simply “the best.” The video clip is full of characters, especially drag queens, although the cameo of Nicole Kidman stands out, who plays the subject to whom the song is dedicated.
