Teenage Fanclub, the beloved Scottish group known for enduring Britpop albums and anthems from the 80s and 90s such as ‘Bandwagonesque’, ‘Grand Prix’ and ‘Sparky’s Dream’, have announced the release of their new album ‘Do Not Dare to Dream’ for October 9 and a promotional tour that includes no less than a dozen dates in Spain, between October 9 and 17.
The album’s title functions almost as an ironic response to motivational mug optimism. “Those ‘dare to dream’ messages are a bit ridiculous,” explained Norman Blake. “I don’t think the world works like that.” The idea connects directly with the tone of ‘Nothing Lasts Forever’, that is why nothing lasts forever and it is best to find refuge in the little things.
Intertwined acoustic guitars, discreet organs and the unmistakable vocal harmonies of Teenage Fanclub once again mark the sound of ‘Do Not Dare to Dream’. From what has been heard so far, the album maintains that warmth so characteristic of the group, combining introspective lyrics with their usual optimism.
The first teaser, ‘Day in the Sun’, is exactly the kind of laid-back, summery guitar pop one expects from the band. The vocal harmonies carry the weight of the song while the lyrics seem to celebrate a happiness found almost by surprise: “Now that I’m here I won’t be walking away / I crossed that river yesterday.” It doesn’t reinvent the wheel, nor does it seem like it intends to.
