After the great ‘This Is How Tomorrow Moves’, beabadoobee’s fourth album is shaping up to be another great release in his career. ‘Pylon’ will be available from September 18 and for the moment we can enjoy two great previews, both in the field of alternative rock and with an unmistakable nineties flare. Today, ‘Switchblade’ is the Song of the Day.
This track follows in the wake of the powerful lead single, ‘Sun Has Set’, mixing several different aesthetics into a single track. A pastiche, but a good one. If that song was reminiscent of both Paramore and Avril Lavigne, ‘Switchblade’ is somewhere between Pixies and Alanis Morissette, uniting the rawness and prominence of the bass of the former with the infectious melodies of the latter. A pinch of Pavement slacker is also served.
The detailed production of the song, at the hands of Beatrice herself along with Jason Vance Harris and Luca Caruso, does not allow any section of the song to be perceived as flat. The lyrics talk about impulsivity and relate directly to what might go through a teenager’s head in the ’90s: “Growing up means screwing everything up again / Grab my knife, self-defense is being brave,” he sings just before the chorus.
About the album, beabadoobee says that he wrote it between tours: “I missed my home, I missed what people were like and I’m still learning to accept the confusion that comes from the uncertainty of being away,” he explained. On the album she will be accompanied by Hayley Williams and Brendan Yates on the songs ‘Nothing To Prove’ and ‘Powerlines’, respectively.
