It is not common for Robert Smith to use The Cure’s official Instagram to comment on matters outside of music. However, the singer has broken that line to publicly charge against FIFA for the new half-time spectacle of the World Cup final, inspired by the Super Bowl format.
After the publication of the group’s account about the halftime show, with an incredible lineup that includes Justin Bieber, Shakira, Madonna and BTS, Smith responded that it seems like a circus to him: Or in his words: “AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH… #Breadandcircuses #MUGWANK #pleasejustfuckoff.”
He later clarified that his anger was not directed against the artists, but against the very idea of turning the break of a World Cup final into a big commercial show. He has also criticized Donald Trump’s participation in the trophy ceremony, confirmed by FIFA president Gianni Infantino, whom Smith has disparagingly called an “infantosser.” “Tosser” is a very common British insult that means something like “imbecile” or “asshole.”
Smith, who recently performed at Primavera Sound in front of The Cure, also surprised a few weeks ago by appearing by surprise with Olivia Rodrigo to perform live the song they both share, ‘what’s wrong with me’, officially released a week later.
