Benny Blanco has featured Bb trickz for the presentation single of his next album, ‘Hermoso’, which comes out this year. ‘Young and Wild’ bets on an indie sound with a “French touch pulse”, a pseudo-lo-fi aesthetic, disco rhythm and a distorted guitar hook. On paper, the combination was promising, but the result is a totally decaffeinated and listless song in every sense, despite having up to five authors.
Of course, the dirty lo-fi aesthetic of ‘Young and Wild’ is deliberate, but that doesn’t justify how unmemorable the song is. Neither do Bb trickz’s contributions manage to lift it, much less a vocal take that seems recorded with a WhatsApp voice note.
The Madrid native resorts to her usual cold and carefree flow, but sexual rhymes like “cover me with chocolate, today I’ll have dinner if it beats me” or “whenever I want, he breaks me” do not quite elevate a song that sounds like a typical draft still pending completion. The glitchcore coda, present in the video version but absent in the upload to platforms, slightly improves the whole, although not enough.
During the promotion of the launch, Belize Kazi explained in an interview with Los40, from Bilbao BBK Live, how the collaboration came about. «He wrote to me at the beginning of my career, like in the third month. The thing is that he doesn’t take planes and I hadn’t been to Los Angeles yet. Finally, taking advantage of the rapper’s trip to LA, both were able to coordinate the recording.
It was during that session when, according to Bb trickz herself, “he shit in the bathroom of Selena Gomez”, Benny Blanco’s wife. The rapper has also recalled that, to get in the mood, they both ate a considerable amount of snacks and sugar while they finished shaping the song. Given the energy of the result, perhaps one last shot was missing.
