If a new band sounds like it was completely formulated from scratch, it is very likely that members with some experience are hiding behind its lineup. This is the case of Paycheque, a new synthpop duo formed by Allison Goldfarb (not Alison Goldfrapp) of Geranium and Jackson MacIntosh of TOPS and Drugdealer who want to take you to the dark side.
Their music is reminiscent of the time when proposals from people like Nite Jewel, Tennis or Class Actress filled the blogs with hope, and hope is all about it, because the group has only six singles released and no studio album. Their official self-titled debut is released in two days.
Although Paycheque’s proposal, which includes titles that evoke the glamor of the 80s such as ‘Camouflage’, leans towards noir synths and a certain underground sensitivity in the production, referring to the aesthetics of the bands of the legendary Italians Do It Better, such as Chromatics or Glass Candy.
If you like all these groups you can’t miss the decadent glamor of ‘Temporary Love’ or the delicious new wave of ‘Generic Actress’, although the song we choose as Song of the Day today is the most recent, ‘Heatwave’.
‘Heatwave’, which is currently only available on YouTube, combines post-disco rhythms and electric guitars with a chorus that is pure suspense and seduction. The decadent eighties club atmosphere is perfectly outlined throughout the song, and while the group acknowledges that the piece is inspired by artists like Saada Bonaire and Gina Eighties freshness, in 2026.
