Madonna seeks the high of love in ‘Love Sensation’

Madonna has premiered ‘Love Sensation’, the third trailer for ‘Confessions II’, while starring in a busy presentation of the album in New York’s Times Square with Grindr as a collaborating brand.

The peculiarity of the release is that it is a bonus track from the deluxe edition of ‘Confessions II’, which contains 16 songs instead of 12. However, it is the only bonus inserted in the middle of the tracklist and not at the end, so from the beginning it seemed to have the status of a possible single.

‘Love Sensation’ leaves that rare “sensation” of knowing better than a bonus, but not of being as good, in principle, as the two previous singles. Some melody that is too similar, too soon, to that of ‘Bring Your Love’, takes away the impact of the song.

However, the melodic composition of ‘Love Sensation’, in all its disco splendor, is better, more elegant and catchy, than Stuart Price’s generic nu-disco production probably suggests, which, in the end, bears little resemblance to Loreatta Holloway’s ‘Love Sensation’ (1980), and more to two-mile revisions like Modjo’s ‘Lady’, with similar instrumental textures.

‘Love Sensation’ talks about a love that goes beyond the romantic and provides security and trust. The ambiguity of the lyrics seems to point both to a person (“when you’re here with me, there’s nothing that we cannot do”), and to a feeling of faith (“Whenever I doubt you / I have a premonition / And I can see clearly / Where I should be”). The bridge – the best part of the song – includes a psychedelic reference, love being that “drug” that takes Madonna “high to the sky.”
