It’s time, it’s time for us to hear a new single from Melody, although, frankly, discovering that ‘ILARIE’ is a mere version of Xuxa and not a refocused adaptation in some way – even if the result was a disaster – has been quite a disappointment. The worst thing that can be said about a song is that it provokes indifference, and that is the only thing that inspires this ‘ILARIE’ adapted to the funniest electro-dance.
Now that Jennifer Lopez returns to the charts with ‘On the Floor’ thanks to a television placement, Melody competes with her to reimagine a Brazilian classic in the least motivating way possible. It seems that the reason for ‘ILARIE’ is for Melody to recover the children’s audience that elevated her in the early 2000s with hits like ‘El baile del gorila’ or ‘Pata negra’, although it will also serve the diva to fill out her repertoire at the concerts of her current tour without having to spend her time writing an original song. At least the single ‘Alarm’ is quite recent.
But the cover of ‘ILARIE’ is simply a product of the most prefabricated pop nostalgia. Except for the production focused on a groovy electro style – with some flashes of Brazilian funk honoring the author – the original melody and lyrics of the 1988 hit are left intact, including the expression “the Xuxa show”, which sounds strange pronounced by Melody, but guarantees the immediate recognition of that child audience to whom this version seems to be directed.
The superpop video is quite elaborate for what the song offers, and stands out for its retro and colorful component, although, beyond Melody doing TikTok dances and posing gorgeously, not much else happens. Although some have managed to uncover a dark and macabre component behind the video clip, discovering what the next season of ‘American Horror Story’ could be. We are left with this version… and with ‘Esa diva’, at least, in comparison.
