Rivers Cuomo has shared on YouTube a collection of fifteen acoustic covers taken from his archives under the title “randum cuverz”. A movement has initially made fans doubt Weezer if it was an accidental publication.
Among the songs included are lo-fi and acoustic reinterpretations of well-known songs such as “Hey Ya” by Outkast, “Creep” by Radiohead, “Billie Jean” by Michael Jackson, “Lithium” and “Drain You” by Nirvana, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” by Whitney Houston, “Jolene” by Dolly Parton, “Enter Sandman” by Metallica, “When I Come Around” by Green Day, “Sweet Child O’ Mine” by Guns N’ Roses or “Hotel California” by Eaglesamong others.
Many of the recordings are dated between 2018 and 2019, although some date back more than twenty years. Some had already been performed live by Weezer, while others remained completely unreleased until now.
Fans speculate that Cuomo may have accidentally made these files public while organizing old private demos stored on Dropbox, although the musician has neither confirmed nor denied the theory.
The appearance of these recordings coincides with a new stage of activity for Weezer. The band recently released the single “Shine Again”, produced by Kenny Beatsthe first preview of his next studio album, in addition to preparing an extensive North American tour scheduled for this fall.
