Rosalía’s applauded speech at the Ivor Novello

Rosalía was one of the artists awarded this Thursday at the Ivor Novello awards gala, which recognizes the best composers in the music industry. Among those awarded this prestigious award are also Lily Allen, CMAT and Sam Fender, while George Michael has been posthumously made a member of the Academy.

Rosalía, who is currently on a break from her LUX tour, has attended London’s Grosvenor House to collect the award for International Composer of the Year, for the extraordinary ‘LUX’, and her speech is being especially commented on for the moment she points out the inequality of the music industry.

In gratitude for the award, he underlines his own privilege, stating that there are “countless brilliant authors who will not be recognized as they deserve because they are not middle-class white Europeans, whose upbringing has been stable enough to turn a glimpse of talent into a successful career.” As the audience applauds, behind her, Damon Albarn smiles.

During the speech, he stated that the idea of writing a fourth album “terrified” him because of the pressure he felt from “that insatiable monster, commonly known as the music industry,” recalling that he worked on it for three years, and indicated that “not even in his wildest dreams” would he have imagined receiving such a distinction.

As 20 Minutos points out, Rosalía is the first Spanish artist to receive the prestigious Ivor award, although not the first Spanish-speaking artist, since Shakira won it in 2022.
