“The friend is me” is the famous phrase by Noemí Argüelles that has become part of the popular vocabulary, even more than many of those uttered by ‘Paquita Salas’ herself. The character played by Yolanda Ramos made history with an unexpected revelation and now inspires a new song that should be on your radar, one of the news of the week.
Oreiana became known a couple of years ago with the hyperpop of ‘Bbsita’, but she swaps keyboards for guitars in ‘La Friend Soy Yo’, a song in which she challenges the supposed mid-life crisis and the notion that at that age you are an adult by default.
Argüelles’ phrase helps Oreiana to confess that she is the friend who has turned 30 and has her life made up: she has no home, no job, no partner, not a penny, but she does have a tobacco addiction, a musical proposal and a diploma in “sweating her pussy.” In ‘The friend is me’, not even the tons of vocal distortion prevent the fun energy of the song from coming through.
Oreiana is the project of Susana Alonso Vázquez, who has training as a sound technician and publishes music through El Genio Equivocado. Her first album, ‘Deseo conceded’, was released in 2024 and in 2025 the artist delivered her lesbian anthem in ‘Lesbian Garros’.
Faced with more questionable rhymes that seem straight out of another century, such as “they say she’s a little rude, her mother says she’s the repera,” ‘The friend is me’ overflows with impudence and functions as a celebration of “identity in process, dissidence from the norm and the freedom of not fitting in.”
Oreiana will present ‘The friend is me’ live on March 21 at the Sala Salamandra in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, together with Ladilla Rusa and FUTURACHICAPOP.
