The flamenco innovator Rafael Amador (Pata Negra, Veneno) dies

The Sevillian musician and composer Rafael Amadorone of the authentic innovators of flamenco fused with rock and blues, has died at the age of sixty-five.

Rafael Amador was part of Poison and later Black Pawalong with his brother Raimundo Amador. His son Rafael has announced the news on social networks with the following dedication: “The teacher of teachers leaves us. Today the angels and God sing for joy because the teacher is coming, the gypsy prince, the blackleg, the one who created a fusion… You will always be in my heart. I love you, my old man,”

Rafael Amador was sixty-five years old at the time of his death at the Virgen del Rocío Hospital in Seville, the city in which he was born.

Rafael Amador, guitarist, singer and composer, descended from a gypsy family with an artistic tradition, hence he already learned to play the guitar thanks to the influence of his father, beginning to play in the streets and in bars with his brother Raimundo.

At the end of the seventies, both brothers worked with Kiko Veneno in the Veneno project, which left an album, “Poison” (77), which became part of the history of Spanish music and became a benchmark. Soon they became protégés of the producer Ricardo Pachónwho had also been behind the controls of that album. So he supported them in their new musical adventure as Black Pawwithout a doubt a group that wonderfully expanded the borders of flamenco, intertwining those sounds and its roots with those of other genres such as rock and blues.

Essential albums such as “Black Paw” (81), “Gypsy Rock” (83) and “Border Blues” (87), the latter possibly one of the most influential works of that decade and a fundamental influence for many artists of later generations. Rafael and Raimundo’s career together ended a few years later and, from then on, they directed their own careers.
