5 movie that we have seen at the Atlàntida Film Festival

These days the 15th edition of Atlàntida Mallorca Film Fest, organized by Filmin and that every year is growing and growing, bringing us the new works of great directors, and discovering others who are taking their first steps. The AMFF distributes its passes through different palm venues: the Rivoli room, mercy or even outdoor projections in Ses Voltes, where concerts are also included within the programming.

We will talk to you in another article, but at the moment we want to recommend some of the titles that have been seen in this edition, since, for the first time, Jenesaispop is covering the festival from the island. For those who have Filmin, the platform also offers much of its available online program during the course of the festival, so we have also included one of this category.

Materialists (Celine Song)

‘Past Lives’ was one of the best films of 2023, and surprisingly it was only the debut of its director, Celine Song. The expectations were in the air regarding their second work, and more taking into account the distribution of stars: Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal are the protagonists of a … Romantic comedy? It is certainly not what it seeks to be; In fact, it seems to avoid it at all costs (with exceptions), and it focuses more on the mercantilization of love, appointment apps, the flags and the damage that has caused that supposed empowerment of “I love someone who meets all these requirements because it is what I deserve”. The result? Perhaps it is not excellent as ‘Past Lives’, but it is a great film with which we could reflect on the dynamics we have put in looking for a partner.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfn2z7mn5ow

The Designer Is Dead (Gonzalo Hergueta)

We have heard a lot about Miguel Adrover in recent days due to what happened with Rosalia, but when Filmin presented his new original film, many did not know the designer and, at the same time, we seemed incredible not having heard of him and that he would not have already made any film about him. Because, of course, it gives a long way. In 2001, Adrover seemed to be the future of fashion, the figure that New York had been waiting for a long time, someone who in a short time came to people like Anna Wintour. And from there it passed to oblivion with a very hard ease, 11-s through. ‘The Designer Is Dead’ brings us closer to this story, with statements by Adrover himself, whom the Little Spain team, with Gonzalo Hergueta in the lead, managed to convince despite an initial negative.

The wave (Sebastián Lelio)

‘The prodigy’ was a step back in the filmography of Sebastián Lelio. As much as I had Florence Pugh leading the project, the downturn was clear about ‘a fantastic woman’ and above all the prodigious (this yes) ‘dissobedient’. Three years later, Lelio returns with ‘the wave’ and, although it is not at the level of those two (especially at the narrative level), it does recover the pulse: visually it is a pass, the choreographic section (it is a musical, nothing to use, but musical) is excellent and the last section, although it can be exhausting, it is also to applaud.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-r4iu0zsdo

Incognito (Carmen Emi)

Perhaps the biggest surprise seen so far in this edition, since it is a debut; It is the first movie of the British Carmen Emmi. As a starting point, a police officer in charge of ‘Clean’ of Cruising The bathrooms of a mall in the late nineties: the police station has ensured to put a monkey kid to attract the trap to those who try to link with it and that, when the zipper is lower, the scene opposes changes to a plaque and some wives. The policeman, of course, has to pretend that he likes boys … unless he is not really pretending. Tom Blyth, whom until now we knew for starring in the prequel of ‘The Hunger Games’, is in charge of giving life to Lucas (the police in question), and of reflecting with mastery the contradictions and insecurities that he has inside, and that they shoot when he meets Andrew, the character played by Russell Tovey (whom you will know by ‘Looking’ or ‘Years & Years’).https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxyg7nuevim

The neighbors (André Techiné)

Although it continues to rolling, André Téchiné has been in a lower profile for some time for criticism and public; In recent years, only ‘when you are 17 years old’ aroused some more interest. But it is always interesting to approach each new proposal of the person who brought us ‘the wild reeds’ or ‘My favorite station’. Especially if the film is starred by Isabelle Huppert and Nahuel Pérez Biscayart. We do not surprise anyone if we say that the Huppert returns to deliver a magnificent interpretation, here with an addition of tenderness that we are not so accustomed to seeing in their characters and that it manifests itself in its relationship with the character of Pérez Biscayart (which continues to confirm as one of the best actors in his generation) and his family. Note: ‘The neighbors’ can be seen online during the course of the festival. In Filmin, of course.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htm9Bahmnie
